大正末から昭和初期に父（初代平田郷陽）から受け継いだ生人形の技術をいかした人形制作から出発し、昭和10年代は人形芸術運動の中心人物として活躍、昭和20年代には写実を離れた作風へと変化、昭和30年代・40年代以降は後進育成
